Spinal Conditions and Disorders
Spinal conditions cover a broad range of disorders that affect the spine, including spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, fractures, herniated discs, spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage) and more. These conditions can cause pain and discomfort, reduced mobility and nerve symptoms, affecting how a person lives their everyday life. Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are crucial to minimise the impact of spinal conditions and promote an optimal outcome.
Spinal Fractures
Breaks or cracks in the bones of the spine can result from trauma, such as accidents or falls, as well as from underlying conditions like osteoporosis, where bones become weak and likely to break. Spinal fractures can lead to pain, deformity and neurological symptoms in nerves are affected, making it important to seek treatment early to reduce the likelihood of long-term suffering. Treatment may include rest, bracing, or, in more critical cases, surgical measures to stabilise the spine and encourage the healing process.
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This is a common cause of lower back and leg pain, as well as sciatica pain, which can lead to symptoms like sharp pain, numbness, and weakness in the arms or legs. Spinal stenosis often occurs from age-related wear-and-tear, herniated discs and bone spurs and can be treated with physical therapy, medications, or, in more severe cases, surgery to relieve the compression on the nerves.
Revision Spine Surgery
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) is an advanced approach in orthopaedic surgery for treating various spinal conditions, like lumbar decompression and spinal fusion, with smaller incisions and reduced tissue trauma compared to traditional open surgery. It allows our surgeons to operate with greater precision and enables a faster recovery for our patients with less post-operative pain so they can return to their daily activities sooner.
Herniated Disk
Up to 80% of people will experience lower back pain at some point in their lifetime, some of which may be caused by a herniated disk. A herniated disk can occur anywhere along the spine; however, it is most common in the lower back and often results in concurrent leg pain. Symptoms can include sciatica pain, numbness and tingling, weakness in the leg and loss of bladder control in extreme cases. Usually, a few weeks of non-surgical treatment can relieve pain, but when it doesn't, our spinal surgeons may recommend a micro-discectomy.
Micro Discectomy
When back pain isn't relieved with non-surgical treatment, our advanced spinal surgeon might recommend a micro-discectomy. This is the most common procedure used to treat a single herniated disc, performed by removing the herniated disk through a small incision, along with any fragments that are causing pressure on the spinal nerve. This procedure is done using a Spinal Microscope, requiring smaller incision and less dissection. Typically, painful symptoms are improved, followed by overall strength and sensation, so patients can get back to living the life they love.
Cervical, Thoracic & Lumbar Decompressions & Fusions
Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar decompressions and fusions are surgical procedures used to address various spinal conditions to alleviate pain, restore function and improve spinal stability. A decompression procedure involves relieving pressure on the spinal nerves, while a fusion procedure stabilises the spine. Our talented spinal surgeon will recommend which type of surgery is best for you based on the location and severity of your condition.
